Garden Club Members Tour Loxahatchee River

On June 6, 50 members of the Wellington Garden Club drove to Jonathan Dickenson State Park in Hobe Sound for a riverboat ride on the Loxahatchee River and a tour of Trapper Nelson’s property that is featured there. They saw several alligators, many osprey and their gigantic nests, a yellow-headed night heron, and a yellow-bellied slider turtle resting on a log. The guide pointed out all the riverbank flora: cypress, swamp lilies and many huge leather ferns. Another guide led the group through Trapper Nelson’s self-built home and outbuildings far upriver, and described his life and history. Shown above, the boat glides along the Loxahatchee River.
