Temple Beth Torah Honors Bondi Beach Victims At Chanukah Gathering

A candle lighting at Temple Beth Torah honored the victims at Australia’s Bondi Beach shooting.

Temple Beth Torah in Wellington held a beautiful outdoor ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 17 that blended remembrance, healing and hope. More than 100 members of the congregation and the community gathered to honor the victims of the Bondi Beach tragedy, offering prayers and reflections in solidarity with those affected, and with the global Jewish community.

The ceremony also embraced the enduring message of Chanukah. As the hannukkiyah (Chanukah menorah) was lit for the fourth night of the Festival of Lights, participants reflected on the power of light to push back darkness, even in moments of sorrow.

Rabbi Andrew Rosenkranz addressed the gathering. “When acts of violence try to spread fear and darkness, our response must be to remember, to stand together, and to bring more light into the world. Each candle we light tonight is a commitment to healing, hope and our shared humanity,” he said.

Temple Beth Torah expressed gratitude to all who attended, underscoring that shared remembrance and the lighting of the Chanukah candles can be a source of comfort, healing and renewed hope.
