CAFCI Packs Shipping Container Of Hurricane Relief Supplies Bound For Jamaica

Ever since Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica in late October, the Caribbean-Americans for Community Involvement (CAFCI) have been collecting aid items to send.

After two months of work, CAFCI volunteers loaded an array of donated items bound for Trelawny, Jamaica, into a 40-foot shipping container on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at the home of Rhonda and Winston Davis in Loxahatchee Groves. Scouts from Troop 111 helped get donations and load the container.

The effort was organized by Lauriston Simms, who is also meeting the container, helping it clear customs and arranging for it to travel to Trelawny, Jamaica, to oversee the distribution. Once the container is empty, he will donate it to a family in need to turn it into a home.

Aside from the scouts, donations have come from CAFCI members, Costco, Lowe’s, the Palm Beach County Bar Association, the Young at Heart Club and others. The donations include pallets of canned meat, vegetables and fruit; pallets of water, flour and rice; boxes of personal care items, linens and towels; furniture, school supplies, clothes, shoes, tools and generators.
