On Friday, Sept. 11, the fifth-grade class at Wellington Elementary School had the incredible opportunity to learn about Sept. 11, 2001, from someone who experienced that day firsthand, Major Anthony Makowski.
Makowski served 20 years as an NYPD police officer, including during the events of 9/11. After retiring from the NYPD, he continued his career in law enforcement here in Palm Beach County, serving 15 years with the School District of Palm Beach County Police Department and retiring as a major in 2020.
He shared his personal experience of 9/11 and helped students understand not only what happened that day, but also the courage, sacrifice, teamwork and compassion demonstrated by so many first responders and everyday Americans.
Students listened respectfully, asked thoughtful questions and gained a deeper understanding of why we remember the people, honor the heroes and never forget.
