Wellington High School’s boys varsity basketball team defeated Palm Beach Gardens High School 67-34 on Friday, Dec. 21 in Wellington.
The Wolverines got out to an early lead and continued to dominate Palm Beach Gardens, holding them to half the number of baskets.
Alan Fabius kicked off the game with a basket to put the Wolverines on the board. The Gators responded with a basket of their own, but Dondre Duffus raced across the court to put in a lay-up, making the score 4-2 early in the first period.
The Wolverines extended their lead with another basket by Fabius, followed by a 3-point basket nailed by Duffus. Palm Beach Gardens put in another 2 points, and with 2:52 left in the first period, the Wolverines edged away 9-4.
The two teams traded baskets several times, and both sent players to the foul line, though neither was able to capitalize on the opportunity. But then, Alex Peavler nailed a free throw to make the score 12-6 with just over a minute left in the period.
Both teams struggled for the remainder of the period to sink baskets, and the quarter ended with Wellington in the lead 12-6.
The Wolverines kicked up things a notch in the second quarter, scoring 22 points alone, while holding Palm Beach Gardens to only 14 points. Their tough defense continued for the remainder of the game as they doubled the Gators in points.
Duffus led the Wolverines in points, putting in 23, while Stephon Gordon added 14 points.
The Wolverines return Friday, Jan. 4 after the holiday break, when they travel to Martin County High School for a 6 p.m. game.
