Wolverine Lacrosse Dominates Cardinal Newman 18-1

BY GENE NARDI

On Friday, March 8, the Wellington High School boys lacrosse team traveled to Cardinal Newman High School and bested the Crusaders, winning by a score of 18-1.

The Wolverines dominated the Crusaders throughout the contest, and nearly earned the shutout before surrendering a late second half goal.

During the first half of play, Wellington racked up 12 goals and held the Crusaders to just three shots on frame. The Wolverines possessed the ball the majority of play, giving the Crusaders little opportunity to score.

Cardinal Newman was able to pressure the Wellington defense a little more in the second half, forcing Wolverine goalie Dylan Oporto to come up big, making 7 saves.

The Crusaders did manage to sneak one into the net near the end of the contest to avoid the shutout.

The Wolverines are 5-2 on the season, with their only two losses coming to state ranked teams, Jupiter and Vero Beach.

Top performers for the night were Patrick Oporto and Tyler Kuhlman combining for 8 goals and 2 assists. Thomas Oporto and Hunter Dietz each had 2 goals. Jason D’Aoust, Viet Ho, Christopher Englert, Kevin Burch, Ryan Blum and Chris Sullivan all scored.

Wellington traveled to Miami Killian High School for a match Thursday night, but results were not available at presstime.
