Western Academy Charter School in Royal Palm Beach, recently ranked in the top 20 percent of all schools in Florida, will launch a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Academy in August 2014 as a special academy within the current middle school program.
The STEAM Academy will begin with sixth grade and roll up each year into a full middle school program. When complete, the program will consist of two classes at each middle school grade level, for a total population of approximately 120 students.
STEAM education prepares students in competencies and skills in the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math. The program brings the arts into these areas to foster the creativity, ingenuity, and innovation necessary for creating new jobs and industries in the future.
“STEAM creates 21st century learners, explorers and inventors,” explained Linda Terranova, principal of Western Academy Charter School. “Our STEAM Academy will take students who are interested in and excited about math, technology and science, and further develop their skills and talents.”
The school’s high scores in math and science make the new academy a natural area for an expansion.
Western Academy Charter School was designed as an innovative alternative to traditional public school education. It opened its doors on Sept. 2, 2003.
Designated by the Florida Department of Education as a High Performing Charter School and a 5 Star School, it has been an “A” school since 2006. It is also “A+” rated by the Florida Consortium of Charter Schools.
The school currently serves 385 students in kindergarten through eighth grade who reside in Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Loxahatchee Groves, The Acreage, western Lake Worth and Lantana.
The school’s mission is to equip all children with the skills necessary for success on both an educational and social level. It addresses the whole child through a multi-sensory approach to learning. The school’s program includes both the family and the community as essential participants in the education of children, with the goal of creating socially adept individuals with self confidence, self respect, compassion and respect for others and the community.
