Franklin Academy Chess Expo At Wellington Green

Bianca Plaza faces off against Jacen Sharkey while her brother Emmi watches.

The Mall at Wellington Green was filled with chess players of all ages on Saturday, Jan. 22 when the Franklin Academy hosted a free chess expo. Chess coaches were on site for all players to challenge or learn from.

“In the past, we’ve done chess expos, and they’ve always been very well attended. We find that the younger children really are very engaged in the game,” said Rachelle Crain, the mall’s marketing manager, who hopes to organize similar events in the future.

Chess is integrated into the elementary curriculum at the Franklin Academy and is also provided as an elective for middle grades.
