On Tuesday May 13, the Emerald Cove Middle School boys and girls track teams competed against all Palm Beach County middle schools in the county championships. Miguel Gutierrez, a standout student athlete, participated in the one-mile and 800-meter race. Gutierrez won both races, earning him the county titles. In the one-mile race, he broke the Palm Beach County Championships record with a time of 4 minutes, 36 seconds. That broke the previous record of 4 minutes, 44 seconds first set in 1980 and tied in 1994. In addition, the Emerald Cove boys track team earned the county title, and the girls track team took third place.
