• Marksmen Earn Fourth — The JROTC marksmanship team took fourth place in competition against seven area schools Jan. 12 at Atlantic High School.
“It was a standard three-position meet that involved firing in the prone, standing and kneeling,” said retired Lt. Col Hans Hunt, the battalion commander. “For each firing position, our marksmen would shoot 10 shots at the target from a range of 30 feet. Joseph Rimi and Brogan Zelinka, the top shooters for the team, learned that they need to work on their timing and not to rush. Next competition, they’ll be ready.”
• Drive to Honor Newtown Victims — On Monday, Jan. 28, students in the SRHS National Honor Society, in cooperation with the SECME engineering club, will host a special blood drive to honor those killed in the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
“Giving blood is a small sacrifice with great rewards,” SECME sponsor Erich Landstrom said. “Each donation can save up to three lives.”
For every pint donated, SECME celebrates by launching a “personalized” water rocket.
“This year, to honor the 20 children and six adults who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School, NHS and SECME will release 26 water rockets, each dedicated toward a child or adult killed in the shooting,” Landstrom said.
