On Sunday, April 7, the Wellington branch of the Palm Beach County Library System will host the closing celebration for the local chapter of First Book, an organization that gives books to area schools and reading programs in an effort to increase literacy. The celebration will feature illustrator/artist Janeen Mason and graphic novelist Greg Neri (via Skype). Prizes for top readers include tickets to the Rapids Water Park.
Since forming this past year, First Book South Florida has already granted books to one area school and one area reading program. The volunteer board is joined in their efforts by Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education, Whole Foods Market in Wellington, Duffy’s Sports Grill, Boynton Reads, Barnes & Noble and the Palm Beach County Library System. Studies repeatedly show that access to books is the key to reading success. First Book board members believe that a stable supply of books will lead to FCAT success.
Director of Grants Carrie McDonald feels that each penny earned is going far. “We are so happy to be able to give these books to children right here, in our communities,” she said. “A read-athon is a great way for kids to help kids and to make reading fun. I know the kids at Forest Park Elementary are going to love their books. This event will give us the opportunity to serve even more children.”
Read-athon sheets will be available at the kickoff party Saturday, March 23 at Whole Foods Market in Wellington, online at www.facebook.com/FirstBookSouthFlorida or by e-mailing sflorida@firstbook.org.
