Wellington Boys Lacrosse Squad Routs John I. Leonard 19-1

The Wellington High School boys varsity lacrosse team steamrolled over John I. Leonard High School 19-1 on Friday, March 15 in Wellington.

The Wolverines put the pressure on the Lancers, shutting them out in the first half.

But early in the second half, John I. Leonard rallied to squeak in one goal and prevent a total shutout.

Wellington kicked off things early, nailing several shots in a row. By the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines were up 10-0. Then, minutes into the second quarter, Wellington scored another pair of goals to make the score 12-0.

With 6:50 left in the first half, Thomas Oporto grabbed the ball and sent a shot sailing past the Lancer goalie, adding another point. Minutes later, Patrick Oporto added another goal to make it 14-0.

Wellington continued to dominate, not giving the Lancers any opportunity to score. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the half, Jason D’Aoust nailed another shot to make the score 15-0. Two minutes later, Ryan Blum added another goal, giving Wellington a 16-0 lead.

On the next draw, the Lancers got the ball but lost control of it. Allen Moye grabbed a loose ball and put in a goal with 1:23 left in the first half to make the score 17-0, where it would remain at halftime.

Though the Wolverines managed to shut out John I. Leonard in the first half, the Lancers weren’t going down without a fight. Right out of half time, John I. Leonard picked up the ball and managed to outrun the Wolverine defense, sneaking in a goal to make the score 17-1.

While the Lancers could not make up for lost time, they were able to hold Wellington to only two goals in the second half, finishing the game 19-1.

The Wolverines next host Palm Beach Central High School on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
