James Coleman Gordon Sr., 83, entered into the presence of the lord and savior Jesus Christ on Friday, March 15 at his home in Altha, Fla. following an extended illness.
Gordon was one of seven children born to the late William Charles Gordon and Julia Pennington Gordon and was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and his sister. He was born and raised in Gaffney, S.C., and had been a longtime resident of Loxahatchee prior to living the last few years between his children in Lake City and Altha.
Gordon was a veteran of the United States Army, having served two tours in Korea. He specialized in the construction of outdoor billboards prior to retiring. He spent his retired days watching Shepherd’s Chapel with Mr. Murray and studied God’s word with them every day. He was an avid fisherman and shared his passion with the next two generations of his family, teaching his hobby to his children and grandchildren. He will forever be remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. His loyal and faithful companion, his beloved dog Trouble, died on March 11 after 13 years of devotion to Gordon.
Gordon is survived by his children, James Coleman Gordon Jr. and his wife Janet of Loxahatchee; Becky Holloway and husband Dwayne of Lake City; and Florence Simmons and husband Seldon of High Springs; grandchildren, Dewey Holloway (Amanda) of Fort White, Fla.; Tim Holloway (Stephanie) of Jacksonville; B.J. Simmons of High Springs; Jamie Lynne Gordon of Loxahatchee; and James Coleman Gordon III of Loxahatchee; and great-grandchildren Taylor Anne Holloway, Fisher Taylen Holloway and Kymber Rose Holloway. The mother of his children, Thelma Estelle Flanagan of High Springs, and a very special friend, Lucy Nixs of Blountstown, Fla., also survive.
The family wishes to thank all of the staff of the Covenant Hospice and the V.A. hospitals in Lake City and Altha for their loving care, and all of the family and friends who brought joy to his life.
Memorial services with military honors were conducted March 23 at Providence Village Baptist Church in Lake Butler, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Shepherd’s Chapel TV Ministry, P.O. Box 416, Gravette, AR 72736.
