The Wellington High School varsity baseball team narrowly defeated the King’s Academy 5-4 on Thursday, April 11 at the Wolverines’ home in Wellington.
The Wolverines pulled it together in the final inning to squeeze out a win in a last-minute effort, leaving the Lions just one run behind.
Though both teams seemed to be evenly matched, Wellington put up a run first in the second inning. The Lions attempted to even the score, but were unable to get runners across home plate.
In the fourth inning, Wellington’s Matt Morales bunted the ball to get on first base. Teammate Brad Riddle was up next and walked to first, pushing Morales to second. On the next at-bat, Morales stole third, and Wolverine Jake Summey hit a ball to bring Morales home, making the score 2-0.
Though Wellington had a confident lead, the Lions were not willing to go down without a fight. In the sixth inning, Lions batter Mark Zippin hit a ball into left field, bringing home teammates Dominic Mercurio and Mitchell Evelyn to tie the score at 2-2 with no outs.
By the end of the inning, the King’s Academy sent home two more runners to take the lead 4-2 over the Wolverines.
Though things looked glum for the Wolverines, they pulled through with three runs in the final inning to win the game.
The Wolverines faced Park Vista High School on Wednesday, April 17, but results were not available at press time. Meanwhile, the King’s Academy hosted Summit Christian School on Thursday, April 18, but results were not available at press time.
