On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Audubon Society of the Everglades will hold its annual ice cream social followed by a picture show. Members are invited to bring their best nature photos and tell their stories. Limit photographs to around 12 prints or slides per member. There will be a digital projector on hand, so members can bring digital photos on a USB thumb drive. Large prints and paintings are also welcome.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for guests to make their own sundaes and enjoy cookies, beverages and camaraderie. The event will be held in rooms 101 and 102 at FAU’s Pine Jog Environmental Education Center at 6301 Summit Blvd. near Jog Road. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The August bird of the month is the pileated woodpecker. It’s hard to mistake this creature. The boldly patterned face, large size and bright flash of white in the wings announce its arrival. It has a large red crest and a loud laugh-type call. Come learn more about this fascinating Palm Beach County bird at the August meeting from expert Clive Pinnock.
Also, on Saturday Aug. 3, at 7 a.m., there will be a carpool tour around the stormwater treatment area managed by the South Florida Water Management District. The tour drives around the water impound areas viewing the large amount of birds that accumulate in the waters. The number and variety of birds vary according to season and water levels.
