Wounded Warriors of South Florida has received a grant from the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.
The Wounded Warriors of South Florida’s “No Warrior Left Behind” mission is to provide temporary, immediate financial assistance to service-connected, disabled veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. The organization, based in Lake Park, was founded by five local Marines in 2008.
Services offered to military veterans by Wounded Warriors of South Florida include: assistance with payments for rent and mortgage, power and utility bills, food gift cards, home repairs, donated vehicles and repairs, insurance, loan payments, gas cards and furniture. Areas of current operation include Vero Beach south to the Florida Keys, west to the Tampa Bay area, and south to Marco Island.
“None of this would be possible without community support, especially our volunteer companies like the Guy Harvey organization, which will be part of our ‘Pig Out’ fundraiser at the PGA National Resort & Spa on Sept. 1,” said retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Robert Chelberg, a Wounded Warriors board member. “Many licensed general contractors, mechanical shops, engineers, hotels, taxi services and food suppliers are at our side to help these wounded warriors.”
The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation’s core mission is to fund marine science research, as well as education and community outreach programs, to raise awareness of ocean conservation issues. However, the foundation is also committed to supporting U.S. servicemen and women.
“We understand that without the sacrifices our servicemen and women in the military make every day, we wouldn’t have the freedom to advocate for marine conservation, or any other cause for that matter,” said Steve Stock, president of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. “We support military organizations, and the groups that help our returning veterans, because it’s the right thing for us to do.”
The different military and veterans organizations that have received support from the foundation in the last year include the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Birdies for the Brave, TAPS, Snowball Express, the Gary Sinise Foundation and Landstuhl Medical Center at the U.S. Army base in Landstuhl, Germany.
