Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and chief executive officer of an Atlanta center created to honor his legacy, will deliver the keynote speech at the 2013 Women of Excellence Awards on Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
King, nationally and internationally known as a powerful, motivating and life-changing orator, was appointed CEO of the King Center in January 2012. Her mother, the late Coretta Scott King, founded the center in 1968 after the civil rights leader was assassinated.
Presented by the West Palm Beach alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the nonprofit Delta Heritage Foundation, the event will honor seven Palm Beach County women and one organization for their outstanding service and achievements to enrich the lives of individuals in Palm Beach County.
The honorees were selected by a committee after a nomination process. Awards will be presented in the areas of the arts, education, business executive, social action, humanitarian, health and wellness and Keeper of the Torch. The Fortitude Award also will be presented to an outstanding member of the sorority.
The local honorees include: Trina Slade-Burks (arts), Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler (business), Dr. Camille Coleman (education), Dr. Eugenia Millender (health), Estella Pyfrom (humanitarian), Alberdia Floyd (social action), Genesis Community Health (Keeper of the Torch) and Alma Horne (the Fortitude Award).
Founded in 1913 by students at Howard University, Delta Sigma Theta is a public service sorority of more than 200,000 predominantly black college-educated women.
