The King’s Academy’s theater department is starting the year’s season off in a big way with a witty collaboration of George Bernard Shaw’s book Pygmalion featuring music from one of the world’s most-loved musicals of all time, My Fair Lady. “Pygmalion Sings My Fair Lady” is taking place Sept. 19-21 at 7 p.m. each day.
The comedic story depicts misogynistic and arrogant phonetics professor Henry Higgins as he wagers that he can take flower girl Eliza Doolittle and turn her Cockney accent into a proper English one, thereby making her presentable in high society.
The musical’s 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theater production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version and numerous revivals.
On display during all the shows will be three of Audrey Hepburn’s original dresses that she wore in the movie. These dresses were formerly featured at the Costume World Museum in Deerfield Beach.
The King’s Academy Fine Arts Department has a long history of professional theatrical productions that leaves audiences coming back year after year.
