More than 50 members of the Wellington Elementary School Runner’s Club took part in the Wellington Holiday Mile race on Dec. 8. All the members of the club completed the mile-long run. The club meets every Monday and Friday at the PE field before school begins. The members try to run a mile each time. The club is run by Ms. Ronda Wayne, a kindergarten teacher at the school. Up next, the club will participate in the South Florida Fair Read, Run & Recycle Kids Mile Program on Jan. 18. Endorsed by the School District of Palm Beach County, participants are encouraged to read 15 minutes a day on topics such as nutrition and fitness. Club members will then run a mile through the South Florida Fairgrounds. The fair has partnered with the Southern Waste Systems and Adopt-A-Family to implement “Sneakers 4 Shelters” for this year’s recycling program component. The runners will bring gently used sneakers to the event. The goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of sneakers to be distributed to needy families in Palm Beach County.
