The floodwaters from Tropical Storm Isaac have subsided, and now Wellington is calling for volunteers to clean up its canal banks as part of the 2012 International Coastal Cleanup.
Participants will meet Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. at Wellington’s Public Works Facility (14001 Pierson Road), where they will be assigned a section of a canal. Wellington and Keep Palm Beach Beautiful Inc. will provide volunteers with T-shirts, trash bags, gloves, maps and bottled water. The cleanup wraps up at noon.
All volunteers must register in advance by contacting Chris Degler at (561) 753-2587 or cdegler@wellingtonfl.gov. Students who participate will be eligible to earn community service hours.
The International Coastal Cleanup is one of the world’s largest one-day volunteer efforts geared toward cleaning up both coastal and inland waterways. Last year, nearly 600,000 volunteers picked up more than 9 million pounds of trash.
