It was an evening of motivation, information and laughter all tied into one session at the Wellington Chamber of Commerce Small Business RoundTable on Thursday, Sept. 13 at the Binks Forest Golf Club.
Peter Fogel, a.k.a. “the Reinvention Guy,” discussed personal introspection, improving oneself on many different levels and strengthening teamwork at the workplace.
Prior to entering corporate America and reinventing himself into a direct response copywriter, marketing consultant, corporate business speaker, radio host and best-selling author, Fogel was a standup comedian. For over 25 years, he was an improvisational performer who worked or appeared on many major television shows. Fogel performed standup comedy in Las Vegas, working with big-name comedians.
Fogel explained the meaning of reinvention as a complete makeover, bringing back into existence or use, recast something familiar and old into a different form. He applied this definition to people and discussed how they can utilize this principle in their lives to improve their situations. Fogel discussed his definition of the “golden handcuffs” to be “making a lot of money and having a good lifestyle, however, hating what you do.”
To get out of these handcuffs, Fogel reviewed the four modes of learning, which were unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence and unconscious competence. Everything Fogel discussed was sprinkled with humor.
There was also a funny, interactive group exercise with seven volunteer participants. The purpose was to demonstrate how teamwork starts and how it gets better over time. The people attending began getting involved with this exercise as well. They jumped in to help the volunteers so the whole room eventually got involved.
This was the fifth session of the Small Business RoundTable series. The sixth and final session will be in October; the information on that session will be provided shortly.
