On Wednesday, Jan. 17, the state legislature’s Veterans and Military Families Caucus held its first meeting. The caucus was originally formed in 2011 but has not been active in a number of years.
At the meeting, members of the caucus were installed, bylaws were adopted and the caucus’ coordinating council was elected. State Rep. Matt Willhite (D-Wellington) was elected caucus chair, while State Rep. Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills) was elected vice chair and State Rep. Sam Killebrew (R-Winter Haven) was elected to the position of caucus clerk.
The caucus was reformed to help build support for legislation aimed at assisting active military members, veterans and their families. Members of the caucus include legislators from both chambers and both political parties.
“I am deeply honored to have been elected chair of this caucus, and I look forward to working together to advocate for our veterans, military families and those actively serving,” Willhite said.
Burgess was also honored by his selection as vice chair. “I am excited by the formation of this bipartisan group of lawmakers who are dedicated to serving those who serve us,” he said.
The caucus will hold another meeting in the coming weeks to decide what bills to officially support this legislative session.
