Wellington Softball Squad Defeats Visiting Broncos 9-1

Wellington’s Alexis Mobilia slides safely into third base.

The Wellington High School softball team responded to an early 1-0 Palm Beach Central High School lead with nine unanswered runs to best the visiting Broncos 9-1 on Thursday, April 19. It was senior night for the Wolverines.

The Broncos (13-8) took advantage of an early Wellington error and led 1-0 going into the top of the second inning. Palm Beach Central played a strong defensive first inning against the Wolverines (21-2).

The Wolverines were able to tie the game 1-1 after the Palm Beach Central pitcher walked in the first Wellington run with the bases loaded. With only one out, Alexis Mobilia hit a line drive for a two-run single to lift Wellington to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Florida commit Sarah Longley delivered another major blow to the Broncos when she struck the ball clear over the center field fence for a two-run homer to extend the Wolverines’ lead to 6-1.

The Broncos, while making contact with the ball often, had difficulty getting on base. Wellington’s defense buckled down in and out of the clay. The Wolverines added three more runs by the fifth inning to open up their 9-1 lead, and closed out the top of the seventh inning with the 9-1 win.

Wellington improved to 21-2 on the season while the Broncos fell to 13-8. Wellington pitcher Sabrina Gonzalez pitched a complete game, as did Palm Beach Central’s Emily Villar. Longley is credited with the 2-run home run for the Wolverines. Kate Desimone also recorded a 2-run single for Wellington.
