Wellington Whole Foods Market will hold a reception to honor artist Maria Lentine on Friday, May 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Appetizers and wine will be served, and there will be live music. Door prizes will be awarded during the evening. The Wellington Art Society asks for a $5 donation toward its scholarship fund.
Lentine is the current Wellington Art Society solo artist featured at the Wellington Whole Foods Market Gallery. Her exhibit will be on display through June.
The exhibit features colorful batik pieces, watercolors and acrylics from her black-and-white series. In addition to batik and painting, Lentine also creates beautiful jewelry. She is largely self-taught, but has studied and learned from gifted artists of design and watercolor. Through her art, she is able to offer different parts of her personality. Her serious adult side is shown through her watercolors, and her playful child side shows in her soft batik paintings. She feels working in acrylics brings out her philosophical side.
Lentine worked and traveled with Club Med for five years teaching English and found that no matter what country she was visiting, the sunrises and sunsets, and the tranquility of the tropical landscape, were a constant and gave her peace. Since then, she has worked with designers and clients creating hand-painted fabrics, murals, commissioned paintings and has directed art galleries.
After a serious accident, Lentine’s painting arm needed to be reconstructed. She found that painting and jewelry-making served as a healing method in regaining her mobility and motor skills. She also discovered yoga, and it became a transformative experience. “Yoga and art are who I am, and my intention is to continue sharing this with others,” she said.
