Acreage Co-Ed Flag Football Celebrates Successful Season

Although the season was plagued with two storms, record rainfall and more than 40 rescheduled games, the Acreage Flag Football Super Saturday Super Bowl Party & Games went off without a hitch on Oct. 27.

In the Midget Division, the Dolphins, coached by Dan Leonard, defeated the Giants, coached by Alex Tirado, in overtime 6-0 with a touchdown by Troy Leonard.

In the Freshman Division, Kyla Bergmann’s quarterback keeper touchdown with less than 10 seconds to go in the game gave Bill Bergmann’s Lions the 6-0 victory over the Dolphins, coached by Mike Rogers.

The Varsity Dolphins, coached by Randy Herron, defeated the Giants, coached by Anthony Tropea, 13-12. In this nail-biter, the Giants started the game with a touchdown by Cristian Lagos. The Dolphins’ Jarod Forman scored a touchdown to give his team the go-ahead lead 7-6. In the second half, Melanie James scored for the Giants, but that touchdown was quickly answered with another touchdown by Forman. An interception by Dolphin defender Kristina DeSorbo with less than one minute left in the game ensured the Dolphin victory.

In the High School Division, the Dolphins, coached by Chuck Thome, and the Buccaneers, coached by Israel Machado, played a strong defensive first half, going into halftime with a scoreless game. In the final three minutes of the game, the Buccaneers rallied and moved the ball into the red zone. Quarterback Madeline Harding connected with receiver Bailee Machado with a 15-yard touchdown reception for the Buccaneers. Center Brie O’Reilly caught the extra-point pass from Harding to give the Bucs a 7-0 lead. The Dolphins did not give up and marched the ball down the field. Quarterback Trace Thome threw a 15-yard pass to receiver Melanie Kinne for the touchdown with less than a minute left in the game. The Dolphins elected to go for the 2-point conversion but after a great scramble by Thome, came up short when his pass fell incomplete, ending with a 7-6 Bucs victory. The Dolphin defense racked up seven sacks in the game, while Nick Craig, Bailee Machado, Christian Vega and Madeline Harding each had interceptions for the Buccaneers.

The Acreage Flag Football League and the Acreage Athletic League would like to thank all the players, coaches, volunteers and parents for an amazing 2012 co-ed flag football season.
