Building upon the momentum of its inaugural year, Oxbridge Academy’s Thunderwolves are heading into their second season with an impressive lineup of coaches. Some of the coaching staff may be new to the school, but they aren’t newcomers to the world of independent high school sports, and each has achieved record-breaking success in their respective careers.
Craig Sponsky leads Oxbridge Academy’s sports program in his role as director of athletics. He moved to Florida in June to take the reins of the program after serving for 14 years as athletic director and head football coach at his alma mater, Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Ebensburg, Pa., where he was previously a standout linebacker/fullback.
The brand-new voice of ESPN 760’s Thursday night football broadcasts, Doug Socha has been appointed to coach the young football team, which will initially be playing at the junior-varsity level.
Katie George was a standout volleyball player before joining the coaching staff at Oxbridge Academy. She earned a Division 1 athletic scholarship to Mercer University in Macon, Ga., where she went on to earn Freshman of the Year in the Atlantic Sun Conference, among other accolades.
Oxbridge Academy Director of College Counseling David Prutow will take on another role this year as swim coach. Over his 30-year career coaching the sport, he led high school teams in New Jersey to win two state championships, nine county titles and 10 conference championships.
After playing professional golf for five years, Meredith Anderson took on the role as teacher, both on the golf course and in the classroom. She will coach the school’s varsity golf teams and teach math.
Kyle Redrow will help keep minds and feet racing at Oxbridge as the new cross country coach and physics teacher. He’s equally passionate about running as he is about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Returning for the second school year is famed NBA and NBL player Dwayne “D-Train” McClain, coach of Oxbridge’s boys basketball team; girls lacrosse and basketball coach Isaiah Suggs, a former three-sport athlete and Athletic Hall of Famer at the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Mass.; and boys lacrosse coach Stan Ross, who led Princeton University to the NCAA National Title in the 1997-98 season before coaching for the United States Naval Academy, Butler University and the Denver Outlaws pro team.
