Steve Winsor of Wellington won the USTA Florida State Men’s 50 Open Tennis Championships held Oct. 25-28 at the Ibis Golf & Country Club. Due to the weather, he had to win four matches in two days, and in the finals defeated Gary Fong of Fort Lauderdale 6-1, 6-4.
“It has been a real comeback as I had major rotator surgery in late 2011,” said Winsor, who has a permanent anchor in his shoulder. “Over the last year, I’ve gone on a low-gluten diet, work out at Youfit gym on a regular basis, and I ride my bike instead on driving whenever possible. I also play tennis about twice a week. It has been a tough year in a lot of ways for me, but wining my first state championship is really rewarding. I was ridiculously excited when I won that final match!”
Winsor was inducted into the Western Michigan University Hall of Fame for his tennis accomplishments. He works as a medical sales rep for Stryker. His daughter Abby was co-captain of Wellington High School’s state runner-up volleyball team last year and is now playing on a full scholarship at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga.
