Stellar Season For WHS Basketball

The 2012-13 Wellington High School boys varsity basketball team made their mark by winning 20 games and a state playoff game, advancing to the “Sweet 16” regional semifinal playoff game for the first time since 2002.

The Wolverines started the season 6-0 led by senior captains Alex Peavler and Stephon Gordon. Along with stellar play by junior guard Dondre Duffus, WHS competed with the best teams in the state, including a nailbiter against nationally ranked and eventual state champion Pompano Beach’s Blanche Ely High School.

Along the way, there were some significant team accomplishments. For example, coach Matt Colin earned his 100th win as WHS head basketball coach during an early-season thriller at home against Lake Worth High School. It was also the second time the Wolverines had won 20 games in the past five years under Colin.

Duffus earned first team all-area and first team all-conference honors. Gordon earned second team all-area and first team all-conference honors. Peavler and Arthur Strappazzon earned honorable mention all-area and second team all-conference honors.

Along with Peavler and Gordon, Nick Arena, Mike Morosco and Stanley Erie made numerous winning contributions in their senior year and will be missed.

With their departure, a number of opportunities will present themselves for the 2013-14 basketball season as Colin, player of the year front runner Duffus and the rest of the team make another run at the state title.
