BY GENE NARDI

The Wellington High School girls varsity soccer team traveled to Riviera Beach on Friday, Dec. 20 to take on Suncoast High School, defeating the Chargers 6-2.

The Lady Wolverines (9-4-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the non-district matchup with back-to-back goals by Anna Garcia. Wellington’s Samantha Grebinar struck just prior to the water break to give Wellington a 3-0 advantage. Suncoast managed to find the back of the net just before the end of the first half to close the gap 3-1.

Wellington came out playing aggressively in the second half, pressuring the Chargers’ keeper. Grebinar scored again up the center. She took a line-drive pass through a hole in the Charger defense from defender Amanda Nardi. Grebinar drove the ball into the left side of the net past the Charger keeper. Suncoast narrowed the gap with their second goal, making the score 4-2.

However, the relentless Wellington offensive attack tallied two more goals from Grebinar to end the match with the 6-2 win.

Grebinar totaled 4 goals on the night, Garcia is credited with two scores and Nardi recorded one assist. Wellington will have a break for the holidays and return Friday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Palm Beach Lakes High School for senior night.
