RPBHS Latin Students Excel At Regional Forum

On Saturday, Jan. 27, Latin students from Royal Palm Beach High School competed in the annual Regional Forum at Northeast High School in Oakland Park. This annual event includes both academic testing and athletic events, known as “Olympika.”

On the academic front, students were tested on their knowledge of all areas of Latin, from vocabulary to derivatives, from Classical Mythology to History of the Roman Empire.

The following Latin I students placed in various academic events: Athena Thai earned first place in Latin Vocabulary and first place in Latin Grammar; Olivia Sordelet earned second place in Latin Grammar and fifth place in Latin Vocabulary; Guyberson Pierre earned sixth place in Latin Vocabulary; and McKayla Hohn placed seventh in Latin Vocabulary.

The following Latin II students placed in various academic events as well: Bryana Samuel earned second place in Latin Vocabulary and second place in Latin Mottoes, Abbreviations and Quotations (MAQ); Rebeca Soto placed first in MAQ and earned second place in Latin Vocabulary; and Astrid Fernandez placed third in MAQ.

Latin III students also performed well. Ashely Ong placed first in Latin MAQ; Micheline Desir placed second in MAQ; and Sophia Perez placed third in MAQ.

Latin I students placed first in Certamen, a game of quick recall, similar to “Jeopardy!” Latin II students placed third in this event. The Latin I Certamen team included Athena Thai, Ashley Silva, LeCory McCoy, Mia Cerda, McKayla Hohn, Daniel Moody and Guyberson Pierre. The Latin II team included Rebeca Soto, Bryana Samuel, Astrid Fernandez and Carloune Benedict.

Out on the fields, the Wildcats also won awards. Latin I students Erin McBroom, Jenna Springthorpe and Olivia Sordelet and Latin II student Kimberly Urizar placed either first, second and third in every single athletic event: the 220, 440 and 880 relay, the softball throw, and the long jump. In the male division, Latin II student Roel Harriott took first place in the 50 and 100 yard dash, first place in long jump, fourth place in the softball throw and second place in the 440 relay.
