Friday, April 12 is the last day this school year that Seminole Ridge High School will accept personal checks. SRHS will still accept bank checks, money orders and cash in payment of financial obligations to the school.
Each school in the district sets its own school-year deadline date. Parents with children in schools other than SRHS should check with those schools to learn their deadlines.
• Veterans Honor Hawk Battalion — The Seminole Ridge Army JROTC academy held its annual veterans and service organizations award ceremony March 7, with the SRHS National Honor Society chapter hosting a veterans dinner prior to the event.
The Hawk Battalion was honored by the presence of World War II tank commander Brigadier General (Ret.) Albin F. Irzyk, who presented for the first time a series of medals struck in his name. SRHS congratulates the cadets and their honors.
• Hawk Junior to Have Air Force Summer — James Bukowski, a junior at Seminole Ridge and a cadet 1st lieutenant in the JROTC program, has been accepted to attend the United States Air Force Academy summer seminar in Colorado Springs, Colo. Thousands of competitive applicants every year from all around the country vie for this opportunity.
At the seminar, Bukowski will experience five days in the life of an Air Force academy cadet, with daily physical training and workshops that the major courses of study. Students are selected to participate in the summer seminar based on a “whole person” concept.
Bukowski’s goal is to attend the Air Force Academy after graduation and be commissioned an officer.
• Hawk Cadet Team Qualifies for State — A cadet team from the Seminole Ridge Hawk Battalion has qualified for state-level competition based on its performance in the recent regional drill meet at Fort Pierce Central. The Hawk Male Armed Platoon — led by James Bukowski and his teammates James Aspenwall, Devon Breen, John Christian, Benoit Cloutier, John DiCampli, Michael Garrity, Cody Kline, Christopher Mitton, Jose Ruiz, Jeremy Searchwell, Vincent Luciano-Sileo and Durhan Williams — placed second in competition and will attend the state finals in April.
In addition, three cadets out of the 18 schools competing placed in “knockout,” in which a judge calls random marching commands and dismisses from formation cadets who fail to follow the commands properly. Cadet Hunter Grabbe received fourth place, cadet Jose Ruiz received fifth, and cadet Cody Kline sixth.
• Debate Foursome on to Philly — Four members of the Hawk forensics team competed in the Dale Lauder McCall Grand Finals tournament March 9-10 at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, and all qualified to attend the National Catholic Forensics League Grand Nationals tournament in Philadelphia at the end of May.
The results are as follows: Wayne Selogy, first place, Student Congress; Keith Miner, fifth place, Dramatic Performance; Melissa Garrity, fifth place, Original Oratory; and Marisa Krecker, sixth place, Dramatic Performance.
