Fawn Tenenbaum has been selected to participate in the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers’ Program/American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors.
Approximately 30 teachers are selected each year to participate in this summer program. Its aim is not only to educate teachers about the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance, but to apply the lessons from this part of history to today’s world and to current lessons in the classroom.
This year’s trip will begin in Washington, D.C at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and continue to Germany, Prague and Poland with stops in Frankfurt, Berlin, Lodz and Warsaw. Tenenbaum’s longtime interest in Holocaust studies stems from a teacher who taught her early in life about man’s inhumanity to man. She strives to teach the lessons of kindness, empathy and respect for others to her students through literature, writing and life lessons.
Currently, Tenenbaum is a teacher at Crestwood Middle School and has taken part in many seminars given by the school district and Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education. In addition, she is the National Junior Honor Society sponsor for her school.
Tenenbaum has been an educator for 20 years, teaching 15 of them at Palm Beach Lakes High School and serving as coach for the debate team, editor of the school newspaper and Title I Coordinator for the school.
The School District of Palm Beach County focuses on teaching the history of the Holocaust in a manner that leads to an investigation of human behavior; an understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism and stereotyping; and an examination of what it means to be a responsible and respectful person.
