On Saturday, Sept. 22, the Wellington Garden Club held a ceremony to plant Florida native trees and plants at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary near Village Park on Pierson Road.
Longtime Wellington Garden Club member Kathy Siena chairs the annual planting event. She was excited about the strong turnout.
“This started five years ago,” she explained. “We wanted to preserve our local environment and give back to the community by planting Florida’s native trees.”
The annual event is timed to coincide with National Public Lands Day. Among those taking part with garden club members were local scout groups. Also attending was Wellington Vice Mayor Michael Drahos and Brian Hopper, the village’s landscape and forestry operations supervisor.
Before the planting started, Siena spoke to the assembled crowd and Drahos presented a proclamation.
Planted at the event were 100 fire bushes, 200 Simpson’s stoppers, 100 myrsine and 100 elderberry shrubs.
