The Seminole Ridge High School freshman football team fell to rival Royal Palm Beach High School 16-7 on Thursday, Sept. 20, in a great exhibition of defensive skill.
The Baby Hawks broke through with the first score of the night as wingback Joey Schergen earned his sixth touchdown of the season on a running play from 12 yards out. Dalton Trimble kicked the point after touchdown to put Seminole Ridge up 7-0. The subsequent kickoff produced a 70-yard return for a Royal Palm Beach touchdown. Since the Wildcats had no kicker, they tried a 2-point conversion and were successful. The score was now 8-7 in RPB’s favor.
The second half was a mirror image of the first half, with both teams showing great defensive play. The Seminole Ridge defense stepped up to shut down the Royal Palm Beach offense, with Josh Minton and Jake Fox making numerous tackles from their linebacker positions.
With the game’s outcome still to be determined, the Hawks mounted their best scoring drive of the game, Joey Schergen taking the pigskin to the 1 yard line. But the Wildcats clipped the Hawks’ wings, breaking the Seminole Ridge offensive line to recover the ball.
The Wildcats marched down the field themselves to score the decisive touchdown, and another successful 2-point conversion wrapped up the score.
