Grandma’s Place, a nonprofit based in Royal Palm Beach, recently announced that it received a $25,000 Supports for Recovery Grant from the Children’s Services Council. The grant is being used for the Parent Support Program’s Ability, Behavior, Learning & Education (ABLE) Program.
Grandma’s Place is the only location in Palm Beach County that provides 24/7 facility-based respite services for parents of children with special needs from birth to age 12, including overnight and emergency availability.
In addition to family emergencies, overnight services are vital to first responders and hospital staffing parents, especially during this period of COVID-19. Respite services to parents include their child’s/children’s participation in ABLE during their respite stay. The ABLE program provides after-school and weekend activities such as music therapy and specialized learning tablets, all of which promote self-esteem, inclusion and growth of social skills. Respite services are critical for family well-being by strengthening and creating a stable family environment best suited for the development of a child/children with special needs.
Grandma’s Place became eligible for the $25,000 in funding because it previously received support from Children’s Services Council through the Great Ideas Initiative. Since 2016, the Great Ideas Initiative has financially bolstered more than 85 local, forward-thinking nonprofits that are helping children and families thrive.
The Children’s Services Council is a special-purpose government agency established by Palm Beach County voters. It provides leadership, funding, services and research on behalf of the county’s children so they grow up healthy, safe and strong.
