On Tuesday, May 3, Seminole Ridge High School varsity flag football quarterback Alex Wilson completed 22 of 31 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns at Callery-Judge Stadium to defeat the Fort Pierce Westwood Panthers 26-0 in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A regional quarterfinal.
Throughout the game, the Hawks (13-3) controlled both sides of the ball, took an early lead and cruised to the 26-0 victory.
In the game, Wilson threw four touchdown passes to four different players. Junior Chelsea Nedoroscik opened the scoring when she caught a first-quarter touchdown pass. The game’s second touchdown pass was corralled by senior Sophia Caprio. The Hawks led 13-0 at halftime. Seminole Ridge closed out the scoring in the second half with a pair of touchdown passes caught by junior Jaida Salguero and senior Alyssa Hill.
While Wilson was happy with her own performance, she was more impressed by her team’s play on defense.
“On defense, we did a great job of adjusting to an offense that we haven’t seen all season,” Wilson said. “On offense, I’ve been working on reading the defensive coverages and looking off our main receivers to get the defense moving away from them and then coming back to those receivers.”
Seminole Ridge head coach Scott O’Hara liked what he saw on the field.
“We are working on peaking at the right time,” he said. “We are playing good football right now.”
This victory marked the fourth consecutive postseason victory for Seminole Ridge, which advanced to a Class 2A regional semifinal game against Spanish River High School, which defeated Wellington High School on Tuesday night by the score of 20-12. The Seminole Ridge-Spanish River game was a rematch of a regular season game on March 29, when Spanish River defeated Seminole Ridge 24-18.
The Class 2A regional semifinal clash between Seminole Ridge and Spanish River was held on the evening of Thursday, May 5. Results were not available at presstime.
With a victory, the Hawks would advance to a Class 2A regional final on Monday, May 9 against either Park Vista High School or Martin County High School. A victory in the regional final would send the Hawks to the FHSAA’s flag football state finals, which will be held May 13-14 at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville.
